Imagine seeing an unsafe walkway at work and putting a note in the suggestion box. You might expect a reasonable employer would fix the walkway. Instead at Bond Street Crossrail station, they sacked Dan Collins and paid £59,000 to a private security firm to spy on him and other union members (who were viewed as a ‘threat to the project’). This is taxpayer funded contemporary blacklisting and unsurprisingly Dan's case was debated in parliament at the time. Collins -v- Crossrail finally ended in the Royal Courts of Justice this week. Despite Dan's statement in open court going unchallenged by the employers in court, they all managed to put out nauseating press statements after being forced to pay compensation in a legal battle.
